Garmin has bought Italian electronic navigation charts company, Navionics.

Garmin CEO Cliff Pemble said the company would combine Navionics content with Garmins own BlueChart and LakeVü mapping systems. Navionics will bring its extensive database of nautical charts for oceans, rivers and lakes, developed in the field and remotely with satellite imagery and laser scanners.

"Navionics has long been known as a leading supplier of highly accurate navigational charts and mobile applications for boaters," Cliff Pemble said in a release. "Going forward, we plan to retain the Navionics brand and will continue to support Navionics' existing customers."

Garmin stated it would continue to employ Navionics 350 employees worldwide. The company did not disclose the financial terms of the deal.
