Our Captain Ben Harris recalls a day’s log on a tuition course we arranged for our client and his family after hand over of a classic Fairline Turbo 36.
06:00am – Check weather forecasts, print off a copy to show clients in detail the wind speeds and gusts.
08:00am – Arrive on board, engine checks, kit check before clients arrive.
09:15am – Clients arrive and we go through the hand over. Briefing for the day with detailed understanding of the weather forecast, tides and starting the ships log.
09:40am – Crew briefing on communications in dealing with ropes and departing from pontoon.
10:00am – Motor slowly under the classic Weymouth town bridge.
10:20am – Take her up to cruising speed, taking into consideration the trim, crew communication on turning the vessel and maintaining a good look out at all times.
11:00am – Ringstead Bay anchorage. Understanding checking of charts, depth, tide and wind appreciation. Transits, bearings and three point fixes to make sure we are not dragging our anchor.
11:30am – Position fixing on our way to Portland Marina.
12:00pm – Portland Marina, plenty of space to practice confined area manoeuvring stern, port and starboard too.
12:40pm – Lunch.
13:40pm – Continue with pontoon manoeuvring with the effect of wind on the bow and springing off.
15:00pm – Man over board practice in the harbour, making sure we communicate effectively on various tasks and using the wind to gently bring us alongside ‘Bob’ our fender man overboard.
16:00pm – Back in Weymouth catching the afternoon bridge. Plenty of practice in and out of their home berth.
16:45pm – Debrief and all pats on the back for a challenging day on the water.
17:00pm – Depart and plenty of smiles all round.
